In alignment with the three themes of Pope Leo’s Message for the 60th World Day of Social Communications, this Commission invites contributions that examine responsibility, cooperation and education on artificial intelligence. (Charter PDF)
Co-Chair: Gabriel Velez is an associate professor in Educational Policy and Leadership in the College of Education, with a courtesy appointment in Psychology, at Marquette University. He is also the Editor of Qualitative Psychology and serves on the Global AI Task Force for the Secretariat for Education of the Society of Jesus. Gabriel is a developmental psychologist who studies identity development in adolescents, particularly in relation to citizenship, human rights, restorative justice, artificial intelligence, and peace. He received a BA in History and Literature from Harvard University, and an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Comparative Human Development.
Co-Chair: Joe Vukov is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and the Associate Director of the Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage at Loyola University Chicago. He is the author of several books, including Staying Human in an Era of Artificial Intelligence. His writing has also appeared in venues including The Chicago Tribune, America, Religion News Service, and many academic journals. Vukov serves on the AI Research Group convened by the Dicastery for Culture and Education and is President of the Philosophers in Jesuit Education. He is the winner of the 2025 St. Ignatius Loyola Award for Excellence in Teaching at Loyola Chicago.
