David Mengel has served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Xavier University since 2016, after four years as Associate Dean. Previously he helped to establish the university’s Center for Teaching Excellence as its founding Faculty Director. David came to Xavier in 2003 as an Assistant Professor in the History department, and subsequently earned tenure and promotion to Professor of History. His published research focuses on later medieval European history, and especially the city of Prague during its golden age in the fourteenth century. David earned an undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt followed by an M.Phil. at Cambridge and a Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from Notre Dame. He has lived and studied in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Czech Republic. David and Emily Mengel have two teenage daughters.
