Reporting to the Senior Director of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), the International Student Advisor performs duties in the two primary functional areas of immigration reporting and international student advising. The first functional area involves responsibility for reviewing and processing immigration document requests from international students and exchange visitors and assisting with federally-mandated compliance requirements related to the Student and Exchange Visitor Immigration System (SEVIS). The second functional area includes advising students, faculty and staff on immigration regulations and reporting requirements. This will also include resiliency efforts to retain our international student population.

 

The International Student Advisor also assists with University retention programs and services through efforts that provide a welcoming and supportive environment for international students and exchange visitors. ISSS supports approximately 2000 international students and exchange visitors each year.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

• Serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) for the university’s F-1 student program and as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the university’s J-1 exchange visitor program. (Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of State).

• Enters and maintains accurate student and exchange visitor data and generates SEVIS events using information systems including, but not limited to, Banner, the Terra Dotta database system and SEVIS batch file processing software, and the SEVIS Real Time Interface (RTI).

• Provides support for the university’s compliance with federal regulations governing students and exchange visitors, including required updates to students’ and exchange visitors’ SEVIS records.

• In collaboration with ISSS staff, assists in advising students and exchange visitors in a variety of matters including U.S. immigration regulations, cultural adjustment, personal matters, financial concerns, and university procedures.

• Analyzes and interprets data for the timely and accurate processing of SEVIS events and production of immigration documents for students and exchange visitors

 

• Collaborates with offices and departments (e.g., Admission, Registrar, International Admission, academic departments, CASA, AEM, etc.) to provide an integrated experience that helps international students and exchange visitors navigate campus processes and the U.S. culture.

 

• In concert with the other ISSS staff, assist and/or lead the development, delivery and assessment of orientations, programs, and events for international students and exchange visitors, including International Student Orientation, International Education Week, and employment-related / tax workshops.

• Provides support and advocate for international students by working with student clubs and organizations, and through outreach to determine student needs.

• In collaboration with the other ISSS staff, assists with retention programs and services through efforts that provide a welcoming and supportive environment for international students.

• Participates in the development and implementation of office policy and procedures.

• Participates in the ongoing revisions of office materials. Assists in developing new forms and informational materials.

• Serves as a liaison with other campus units on specific projects and initiatives as assigned.

• Assists with answering telephones and client reception as needed.

• Other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.

• Interest in working within the context of a diverse, Catholic and Jesuit University located in an urban, multicultural area.

• Strong analytical skills, with the ability to investigate, assemble, analyze, interpret, and apply information from a wide variety of sources, such as the Code of Federal Regulations, policies, guidance, and practices for international students, exchange visitors, and scholars.

• Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to set and meet goals, prioritize workload, handle multiple interruptions and complete a number of competing assignments within established deadlines.

• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and accurately on detail oriented projects and data entry.

• Strong oral and written communication skills, including inter-cultural communication competencies, and the ability to advise and problem-solve around international student issues and concerns.

• Ability to deal with a wide range of cultures and personalities in a professional and tactful manner and to communicate with persons having varying degrees of English proficiency.

• Strong equity lens, cultural humility, and proven ability to work well in a diverse context.

• Demonstrated skill in exercising patience, diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with students.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to work cooperatively and efficiently with staff members having overlapping responsibilities.

• Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion, particularly in matters relative to sensitive or confidential student or organizational matters, and ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with university policy and government regulations.

• Ability to work effectively as an individual with minimal supervision and as a part of a team.

• Demonstrated proficiency using various software applications, and ability to learn new software applications.

• Demonstrated skills in making oral presentations to an international audience through innovative media formats to provide information, instructions, or explain subjects of interest.

• Skills in dealing effectively with ambiguity and uncertainty.

• Ability to work effectively in a strong service environment that is subject to shifting priorities.

• Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

• Master’s degree in higher education administration, college student services administration or related field preferred.

• One to three years of work experience as an international student/scholar advisor at a university, applying the F and J visa regulations to international students’/exchange visitors’ circumstances as well as use of the SEVIS RTI database.

• Experience planning, coordinating and implementing events and programs in an academic setting.

• Prior experience using sophisticated and customizable computer information systems in a higher education setting (such as a SEVIS Batch System or Banner).

• Ability to speak a foreign language and experience living or studying abroad.
