Position Summary:

Responsible for the academic success of physicians in training (residents and fellows). The Graduate Medical Education Learning Specialist provides academic and professional development support services to the Creighton University School of Medicine – Phoenix, Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs, residents, and fellows. Conducts individual consultation, assessments, and support for physicians in training who are experiencing academic challenges and those seeking to improve performance. Provides linkage and referrals to outside resources as required. Ensures compliance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) policies and requirements. This position also requires education delivery to residents and faculty, where appropriate. Experience in higher education, specifically academic coaching required.

This position does not support medical students. Essential Functions:

  • Provides individual consultation, coaching, and support for residents and fellows experiencing academic problems and those seeking to improve academic and clinical performance (e.g., time management, organization skills, etc.). Also provides consultation for organizational skills, test anxiety, stress management, and sleep difficulties as they relate specifically to academic performance in a GME training program. 
  • Provides coaching and support for residents and fellows studying for In-Training Exams, Board exams, etc. Works with residents and fellows who are remediating to develop a plan for success and monitor progress. Develops learning/study plans, monitors progress.
  • Develops annual plan to address academic and professional development support for graduate medical education needs, including teaching faculty.
  • Ensures all resident assessment tools for resident evaluations fit the specific ACGME milestones for each program.
  • Assists in residency curriculum development, including competency-based performance.
  • Work with Faculty Development Committee to help develop and maintain curriculum for teaching faculty.   
  • Presents sessions for residents, including learning and study strategies and organization, time-management, and efficiency-related topics.
  • Maintains online academic success resources/information.  
  • Partners with Creighton University School of Medicine leadership to support academic needs.
  • Participates in scholarly research projects related to academic success and wellbeing.
  • Participates in hospital-wide/area specific committees relevant to job responsibilities.
  • Supports orientation, events, and other GME activities as needed.
  • Membership and participation in professional organizations (Association of American Medical Colleges/Group on Resident Affairs, Medical Education Learning Specialists).

Education & Experience:

  • Masters degree in Higher Education, or related field preferred
  • 1-3 years related experience required.
  • Prefer experience in GME and/or UME/LCME administration or equivalent experience in academic advising in healthcare education.
  • Prefer applied knowledge of adult learning theory and educational psychology, with a documented history of learner support success.
