Position Summary:

This full-time position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Phoenix Health Sciences Anatomy Lab which supports the curriculums of each health sciences programs located in Phoenix.  This position will work directly with anatomy faculty to ensure curriculum success. This position will be expected to consistently interact and communicate with health science students, faculty and outside organizations dealing with cadaver acquisition and cremation.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to budgetary processes; managing and maintaining the physical lab space; acquisition, inventory and maintenance of donor specimens; proper handling of chemicals, surgical and lab equipment, and donor (cadavers) within the lab. This position, under the supervision of simulation operations management, will ensure the laboratory is properly supplied and that all participants follow laboratory procedures, adhering to building and program policies, best practices, and all safety measures.

This position will supervise lab technicians.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, throughout the day.

 

Essential Functions:

·       Manages the procurement, receipt, transfer and return of donors and donor material; manage various contracts.

o   Oversees that donors, donor specimens and teaching materials are properly secured and inventoried on campus.

o   Maintains accurate and thorough records regarding the receipt, use, condition and final disposition of donor and donor material.

·       Ensures that laboratories, laboratory instruments, equipment and supplies are clean, organized and prepared for laboratory sessions. Maintain universal precautions.

o   Coordinates procurement of supplies and maintenance of laboratory equipment/assets.

o   Practice proper laboratory safety techniques and coordinates the collection of waste and report equipment problems for repair, assisting as appropriate.

o   Engage with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), third party consultant(s) and campus facilities team on lab space and safety.

·       Provide primary support for setup and cleanup of anatomy lab including cleaning stations, drying excess fluids, preparing instrument boxes and cleaning instruments and models.

o   Provide donor care and assist in donor positioning as needed (supine/prone, up/down rotation).

o   Oversee/approve scheduling of the laboratory, donor, equipment and supplies including student study reservations.

o   Assists Laboratory Director with the scheduling and use of the laboratories, donors, equipment and supplies. 

·       Assist faculty in the preparation of donors and lab spaces for educational sessions.

o   Assists faculty with the set up and administration of laboratory courses and examinations.

o   Provide instruction to faculty/staff/students on laboratory policies and procedures.

·       Maintain accurate contracts and financial records for donors received by Creighton University from approved sources.

o   Organize and chair quarterly anatomy meeting.

o   Hire and supervise lab technicians and direct others hired for the purpose of lab upkeep.

·       Coordinates the annual memorial service with students and programs at Creighton University using human anatomical donors.

o   Coordinates anatomical outreach programs with faculty, students and staff.  Coordinate lab tours for prospective students.

·       Remains current and compliant with University, State and Federal laws, policies and standards regarding the handling, care, disposition and ethical treatment of donor remains. Remains current and compliant with University training requirements.

·       Support other lab related events as need and other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

·       Associate degree in biological science and 2 years’ experience with biological labs and/or any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

·       Administrative or office management experience managing teams and/or leading projects

 

Preferred Qualifications:

·       Bachelor’s Degree preferred

·       3 years’ experience with anatomy laboratories and cadavers.

·       Ability to work with human cadavers and working with donating families; Strong empathy and skills

·       Knowledge of biological laboratories practices and safety

·       Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments;

·       Strong interpersonal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community;

·       Ability to lead and train staff and/or students;

·       Knowledge of finance, accounting, and budgeting procedures;

·       Efficient and accurate record keeping skills; including ability to manage an electronic data base

·       Basic computer skills are required, including Microsoft Excel and Word for record keeping, documentation and communication. Ability to trouble shooting technology issues or maintenance would be desirable.

·       Maintain confidentiality and discretion when communicating with donor’s family members

·       Ability to function effectively as a team member, while exercising independent and critical judgment;

·       Ability to self-initiate and coordinate/prioritize work with multiple and conflicting demands in a deadline-oriented environment;

·       Ability to work beyond normal business hours which may include limited evening, holiday, and weekend work (when needed)
