Job Summary:
The purpose of a Campus Safety Officer is to contribute to a safe and secure learning and working environment for all members of the Regis University Community, as well as for its guests and visitors. Major Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Patrol buildings and grounds of the University campus, by vehicle, bicycle, or on foot, on a continuous, daily basis in order to identify and assess situations that may impact the safety and security of the University community.
  • Act as an incident commander in response to campus emergencies, reports of crimes, and incidents including medical/mental health emergencies, natural disasters, trespassing, intrusion alarms, burglaries, robberies thefts, drug and alcohol incidents, fire alarms, energy management alarms, assaults, threats of violence, disturbances, and emergency facilities problems. Locate, identify, evaluate and act upon the source or cause of the situation, effectively resolve/assist in the situation, and coordinate as needed with the appropriate resources needed such as police, fire, EMTs, or internal departments such as Physical Plant or Information Technology Services.
  • Perform routine monitoring of safety concerns and hazards for campus buildings and grounds, including fire dangers, lighting needs, toxic spills, water leaks, and heating/hot water equipment problems.
  • Perform continuous inspections of campus buildings on a daily basis including locking and unlocking entry doors, and checking authorized building uses.
  • Enforce all University policies, student conduct regulations, and appropriate Federal, State, and local laws as necessary to ensure compliance by the Regis community and its visitors. Investigate incidents on campus as needed in order to provide for immediate safety needs, and proper handling of the incident and its aftermath as appropriate.
  • Document incidents for administrative action or subsequent criminal prosecution.
  • Maintain regular contact with appropriate law enforcement agencies, University staff offices, and off-campus departments as needed, to guarantee clear and timely exchange of information. These entities include, but are not limited to, the Office of Student Life, Residence Life and Housing, Health and Counseling Services, Physical Plant Operations, Public Information/Media Relations (as needed), Adams County Sheriff, and the Denver Police Department.
  • Insuring proper functioning of building alarm systems, camera surveillance systems, AED Cabinets/alarms, Emergency Phones, and Call boxes
  • Prepare clear and thorough written incident reports as necessary or appropriate. Give testimony at judicial hearings when requested.
  • Participate in staff training activities, workshops and departmental meetings as needed in order to maintain current knowledge and certification of essential campus safety practices and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required to maintain a safe and secure campus and support the University Mission.
  • Assisting people with stranded/locked vehicles on campus.
  • Escorting individuals from buildings to and from their vehicles.
  • Providing security services for special events, such as gate control, crowd control, parking control, locking and unlocking rooms for meetings, etc.
  • Provide safety and security information and guidance to the extended campuses
  • Identifying and reporting maintenance issues to Physical Plant.
  • Delivering emergency messages, mail or other special communications on campus when needed.
  • Upon special request, securing cash from events.
  • Open offices or rooms for authorized use on request.
  • Make educational presentations on safety topics to University community groups.
  • Answer visitor requests for information on events, location and individual whereabouts.
  • Provide safety and security information to staff, faculty, student and visitors to aid in any concerns they may be presented to the Department of Campus Safety.

Campus Safety Officers work in an environment that exposes the officers to physical risks from emergencies, criminal events, and personal confrontations. The Campus Safety Officer must know how to incorporate all facts available in an incident with his/her experience, abilities, skills, and knowledge of University and department policies, local, state and federal laws. Decisions range from handling the situation with the resources at hand, to summoning other resources within the University or outside the University which may include police, fire departments, EMS and the like.
Decision-making issues may include, but are not be limited to:
1. Whether to contact emergency medical or mental health personnel to deal with an injured or ill person.
2. Whether to activate the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) when a crisis situation occurs on campus.
3. Determine if an Emergency Notification or Crime Alert requires distribution.
4. Whether to contact local law enforcement or emergency medical services to assist in a situation.
5. Whether and when to intervene in physical confrontations that arise on campus.
6. Whether to activate the RU Alert Mass Notification system.

The Campus Safety Officer has complete decision making authority to handle safety and crime incidents on the Northwest Denver Campus as they arise, and may also be called upon to assist
in decision making regarding safety and security at an extended campus. Prompt and effective decision making skills are essential to resolve many situations in a timely manner to ensure the safety and security of the campus and its community.

a. University community on the Northwest Denver Campus: As needed by Regis’ RU Alert mass notification system to alert Regis community of situations that may affect the safety and/or security of the campus. When deemed necessary issue Timely Warning (Crime Alert), via RU Alert or by postings on the main doors of campus buildings or issuing Emergency Notifications via the RU Alert.
b. Residence Hall Staff; as needed, in person, radio, writing, and telephone to respond to incidents in and around the halls.
c. Calls from University staff, faculty, contractors (bookstore, custodial, food service), and students to respond to campus incidents.
d. Physical Plant; as needed by radio, telephone, in writing, and personal contact to report problems and safety concerns.
e. Health/Counseling Services; as needed by telephone, in writing, and personal contact to respond to medical or mental health issues.
f. Student Life Staff; as needed telephone, in writing, personal contact, and in writing by the way of incident reports.
g. Extended campuses; as needed by telephone, email, and in-person when possible
h. Event Services, Classroom Management, Food Service, Athletics; as needed, in person, telephone, and in writing, to support event or activity needs.
i. Student/Faculty/Staff/Visitors; as needed in-person, radio, telephone and in writing to respond to requests for information, assistance, directions, parking issues, etc.
j. Denver Police, Adams County Sheriff, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Personnel; as needed to respond effectively to campus emergencies, alarms, etc.

The consequences of errors in this position are mostly of judgment decisions, but may include clerical or technical errors. A fault in judgment or poor response could be detrimental to the health or safety of a person or the Regis community, or University equipment/property. Clerical errors may subject the University to fines or legal actions. Technical errors may compromise safety and security systems. Some of these potential risks and judgmental decisions may be presented at any time in areas such as:
1. Medical/mental health emergencies.
2. Criminal incidents or attempted incidents.
3. Physical altercations, arguments or crowd control situations.
4. Fire safety, hazardous conditions or equipment failures.
5. Natural disasters.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hiring.
  • One (1) year of law enforcement, campus safety or security experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, whether security-related or not, as determined by the Director. Successful candidates will be required to provide transcripts pertaining to formal education.
  • Must successfully pass criminal background check.
  • Must have a current and valid driver’s license, and must be approved as an authorized driver by the University prior to recommendation for hire, and be insurable under University guidelines.
  • Must be in possession of a valid City and County of Denver Security Guard License, prior to performing job duties as a Campus Safety Officer. The documents required to obtain this license from the Department of Excise and License consist of:
  • Certificate of Security Guard Training Completion completed within the last 60 days (16 hours).
  • Certificate of Physical and Mental Fitness completed within the last 60 days.
  • Copy of Valid State or Federally Issued Identification.
  • Head-shot that meets Badging Criteria.
  • Letter of Hire from your intended employer completed within the last 60 days.
  • Affidavit of Criminal and Employment History.
  • FBI background check run within the past 60 days.

Applicants will submit each of these documents to the City and County of Denver Department of Excise and License. The Campus Safety Department will provide the applicant with a Letter of Hire once a conditional offer of employment is made. Successful employment with Regis University Campus Safety Department is contingent upon the applicant obtaining a Security Guard License from the Department of Excise and License. Applicants who, for whatever reason, fail or are disqualified to receive the required Security Guard License will have the conditional offer of employment rescinded and will not be hired.

The Campus Safety Department may reimburse an applicant who successfully obtains a Security Guard License for the Application fee ($25.00) and License fee ($25.00) and will pay the cost of the FBI background check if the applicant has not had one run within the 60 days prior to being made the conditional offer of employment. The Campus Safety Department will not reimburse any other expenses incurred as a result of this process.

Every Campus Safety Officer must annually renew his/her Security Guard License. The documents required for renewal of a Security Guard License by the City and County of Denver Department of Excise and License consist of:

  • A Letter of Hire from the Campus Safety Department
  • A Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) background check run within the past 60 days
  • A Certificate of Security Guard Training Completion completed within the past 60 days (8 hours)

The Campus Safety Department will pay the License Renewal fee ($25.00) and the cost of the CBI background check, and will provide the eight (8) hour Security Guard Training Completion class. Have completed or be capable of completing within 60 days of employment FEMA courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 and IS-800.

1. First Aid/CPR/AED.
2. Pressure Point Control and Arrest Tactics (PPCT) or other law enforcement/security self- defense tactics, including the proper use of the expandable baton, chemical defense spray and handcuffs. These skills will be demonstrated at minimum annually during mandatory recertification training. Any Campus Safety Officer failing to adequately demonstrate proficiency with any weapon or equipment will not be allowed to carry that item. Repeated failure to demonstrate proficiency or a refusal to attend training or to carry any piece of equipment may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
3. Working Knowledge of applicable federal laws which are, but not limited to, the Clery Act, Title IX, and the Violence Against Women Act.
4. Working knowledge of applicable local and state laws and ordinances.
5. Working knowledge of the University’s security procedures and policies.
6. Working knowledge of the University’s Emergency Operations Plan.
7. Working knowledge of the department’s technology and safety systems.
8. Strong verbal/written communication skills in order to interact with student, staff, and faculty and with outside agencies.
9. Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills and high public interaction.

The employee should be able to attain adequate performance after three months on the job and proficiency within six months, including on-the-job training and contact with the campus safety supervisors and staff. NOTE: The 16 or 8 hour Security Guard Training Completion classes required by the Department of License and Excise must be completed in accordance with the timeline set by that agency. No weapons (expandable baton, chemical defense spray) will be carried or used by any Campus Safety Officer unless he/she is trained in their use by a certified instructor.

Physical and Mental:
It is the policy of the Department of Campus Safety that all uniformed officers maintain a level of physical fitness to perform job related tasks that they may be called upon to do in the performance of their duties. In accordance with the requirements of obtaining a Security Guard license, a medical exam and accompanying tests will be administered by a health care provider at the time the Security Guard license is obtained, and prior to acceptance of employment by the department. It is the responsibility of the Campus Safety Supervisor to remain in such physical condition that they can successfully maintain fitness standards to
ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments. While performing the duties o
the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk unassisted, and run, climb stairs and may lift and/or move 50 pounds or more, such as when moving incapacitated individuals away from dangerous circumstances. Specific vision abilities required by this job include correction to driver’s license standards, close vision, distance vision, night vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Campus Safety Officers must possess the ability to hear for safety reasons inherent to the essential functions of the job.

The ability to make appropriate judgments based on available information is vital for the complete and proper resolution of emergency, safety or security issues. (Essential)
Use of Weapons and Equipment: Campus Safety Officers must be capable of properly using all weapons and equipment issued or used by the Department, including, but not limited to expandable batons, chemical defense spray, handcuffs, portable radio, flashlight, guard tour pipe, and patrol vehicles, and must demonstrate proficiency to the standards of the person or entity overseeing instruction in their use.

WORKING CONDITIONS: (Physical environment)
Work outdoors in all weather conditions and temperature extremes requiring extensive foot, bicycle, or vehicle patrol. There is a risk of physical harm incurred by the duties of the position. Long periods of standing, sitting or walking may be required.

Personnel assigned to Day Shift (7 AM-3 PM) are paid $20.00/hr.

Personnel assigned to Evening Shift (3 PM-11 PM) are paid $21.00/hr.

Personnel assigned to Midnight Shift (11 PM-7 AM are paid $21.50/hr.
