Assistant Director

The Assistant Director, Planning & Design is responsible for the management of Project Development, Planning, and Design for the University’s annual capital projects, and design support for the strategic planning of existing campus facilities. This will include the planning, design, and implementation of the University’s Alteration & Renovation (A&R) process.  This will also include annual Renewal & Replacement projects. The Assistant Director will develop, document, and maintain campus architectural, accessibility, and sustainable design standards.

The Assistant Director will provide management and leadership for a staff of 2 professional employees in the Planning Group.  The work will require close coordination with the Associate Director, Annual Capital Projects, Engineering and Energy Management, Capital Construction, and Facilities Services.  It is crucial that the Assistant Director be able to accurately identify and integrate the MEP system impacts and design components. He/She will be responsible for FF&E selection / sourcing and quality control of design through all phases of projects. He/She will also oversee quality control of design through the construction phase of projects. The Planning Group is also responsible for the archiving of project documents and campus/building information, and the management of CAD systems.

The Assistant Director also assists the Associate Director and Director Annual Capital Projects in overall department management and department leadership.

 

Requirements

Minimum of ten years of strong planning/design experience, with an emphasis on the integration of systems, is required.
Previous experience must be in a position as “responsible manager” for project design solutions, project schedule, client interaction, and project financials.
Project Management experience and personnel management of technical and design professionals is required, with the ability to handle multiple projects. 
Previous experience within higher education is desirable.
Position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Familiarity with MEP/FP systems design and installation, and CAD systems.
Practical in-the-field experience is required.
Experience in project scope development, cost estimating, scheduling, and budgeting is required.

Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Interior Architecture, Architecture, Planning or Construction Management; Advanced degree preferred. NCIDQ Certification or Massachusetts Professional Registration in Architecture preferred.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $100,950 to $126,200; salary commensurate with relevant experience.
