Higher Education Act

In 1965, the first Higher Education Act (HEA) was signed into law by President Lyndon Baines Johnson. The HEA provides a framework for our federal investment in post-secondary education by outlining the rules and regulations that guide the Federal higher education programs. Approximately every six years, the entire HEA is reconsidered, which is known as reauthorization. The purpose of a reauthorization is to update, alter, add new programs or rules, and eliminate others to ensure integrity, access and affordability of higher education.
