WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Saturday, January 28th, Rev. Michael J. Sheeran, S.J. was named the recipient of the Hesburgh Award at an awards dinner during the annual meeting of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) in Washington, D.C.
The award is the ACCU’s oldest honor: named for former University of Notre Dame President, Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC, it was first awarded in 1982.
The award is given to those who meet the following criteria:
- Has made outstanding contributions to Catholic higher education
- Has rendered extended service to Catholic higher education
- Normally has been employed at a Catholic college or university but is not currently serving as a president (unless retirement is anticipated within the current academic year)
- Has contributed to Catholic higher education beyond service rendered to a particular institution
Fr. Sheeran has served as president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) since 2013. Prior to AJCU, he served as president of Regis University from 1993 to 2012. He previously served as academic vice president of the University from 1982-1993 (click here for a full biography).
