Jesuit Basketball Spotlight Celebrates 5 Years of Academics and Athletics

This winter, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) will celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight (JBS) program. Since the 2008-2009 season, JBS has brought greater positive awareness and exposure to Jesuit education and its shared mission to thousands of people across the nation who have attended over 450 basketball games played by Jesuit institutions against each other.

To commemorate this anniversary, AJCU has produced a promotional video that celebrates the academic, spiritual and basketball traditions of all 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. Jesuit institutions promote academic excellence, service and justice, and encourage students to seek God in all things and be men and women for others. Today, Jesuit institutions boast over 2 million living alumni across the world, including nearly 10% of the United States Congress and basketball legends Bob Cousy (College of the Holy Cross), Bill Russell (University of San Francisco) and John Stockton (Gonzaga University).

During the 2013-2014 season, the men’s and women’s basketball teams from all 28 Jesuit institutions will play against each other in 91 games. Full schedules are available to download in PDF format:

  • Half-time programming, e.g. academic/service honors ceremony
  • Community service drives: coordinate with local Jesuit Volunteer Corps (or similar organization) to collect canned goods before a game
  • Feature an interview with a Jesuit university president or mission and identity representative for local advance newscasts or game coverage

Quote of the week

"One of the key phrases capturing the charism of Ignatian spirituality is “to love and serve in all things.” Here lies the key to Jesuit higher education in the 21st century. For a Jesuit university should ask more of its students by challenging them to make Ignatius’ charge—his notion of service—their own."
Rev. Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., President, University of Scranton
